Sometimes I hear a really old song on the radio.

And I sing along automatically.
And I realise I know every word,
without thinking.

And it occurs to me that singing those words to myself all those years ago means that my brain can
remember them, recall them, and feel them at any given moment.

Because it has internalised those words without me even realising so that it takes no effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind.

That’s how powerful our brains are.

And it makes me think about the way we speak to ourselves.

See, maybe if we’d learned to internalise not just song lyrics
but words that told us we were
beautiful enough worthy
when we were younger,
we’d be able to recall those words
those thoughts, those feelings
at any given moment too.

And maybe we’d have learned to believe them.

Believe that we are beautiful enough worthy.

But it’s not too late.

We learn the words to new songs all the time.

Maybe it’s time to start singing from a new song sheet.

One that reminds us how absolutely incredible and worthy we really are.

  2. I’ve worked with children a lot in my life and I found that singing to small children about the things you want them to learn and remember works wonders.

  3. Yes memory is associative. When I visit places I have not seen in decades I remember forgotten items, buildings, creeks, clearings, and much more, before I see them. Just seeing some of it brings back the rest. It’s all stored/hidden in our brains. We just need a trigger to remember.

  4. Memories can be a good thing of things that occur days gone by but also our memories remember things we long to forget. However, I love remember the songs that I learn as a young girl it brings joy to my heart.

As someone who struggles with memorization I find it incredible that I can remember song lyrics as well. When I became a Christian I was afraid of the challenge to memorize scripture. So often times, I sing the scriptura in my head and it often helps me remember the verses. It may not be the way we are meant to memorize Bible verses, but I consider it a gift from God and I use it to honor Him and Glorify Him.

  7. We literally become what we eat, mentally and physically. Reading, too has its effects on us, depending on what we feed on.
