When you were a baby
you’d follow me with your eyes when you’d hear my voice.
I was your entire world.
And seeing you look at me like that was an indescribable feeling.
But motherhood is more of a game of chase,
where mom’s “it.”
Because for the rest of my life, I’ll follow you.
I’ll follow you through the sweet spot between baby and child as you wobble away, making funny noises.
And I’ll smile as I see glimpses of the person you’ll become wrapped in a little round body.
I’ll follow you when you start school, to the door, saying goodbye, as we both shed some tears.
Five minutes later, I’ll peek in to see you playing with new friends, a smile plastered on your face that will put my heart at ease.
I’ll follow you with my eyes when you graduate High School, you in your cap and gown as you proudly cross the stage to get your diploma.
I’ll sit in the audience glowing with pride, too. And not just for your diploma but for the incredible person you grew into during these 18 years under my roof.
And from there,
I’ll keep following you,
wherever you may go—
through weddings,
babies,
and big life changes.
Even if the distance is far,
I’ll still be there,
because our hearts are connected,
so wherever you go, I’ll follow,
and catch you.
