Aparece donde miramos de cerca y con cuidado a otro ser, a algo que no es nuestro «yo». La ternura es espontánea y desinteresada; va mucho más allá del sentimiento de empatía. Es en cambio el compartir consciente, aunque quizás un poco melancólico, del destino común. La ternura es una profunda preocupación emocional por otro ser, su fragilidad, su naturaleza única y su falta de inmunidad al sufrimiento y los efectos del tiempo. La ternura percibe los lazos que nos conectan, las similitudes y la similitud entre nosotros. Es una forma de mirar que muestra al mundo como vivo, interconectado, cooperando y codependiente de sí mismo.”

It is instead the conscious, if perhaps slightly melancholic, sharing of our common destiny. Tenderness is a deep emotional concern for another being, their fragility, their unique nature, and their lack of immunity to suffering and the effects of time. Tenderness perceives the bonds that connect us, the similarities and the likeness between us.
