«Just wait until you’re a mom. Then you’ll understand.»
You’ll no longer roll your eyes and slam the door.
You’ll no longer say, «It’s unfair!» and stomp away.
You’ll no longer think she’s uncool, too controlling, and trying to ruin your life.
You will understand her every word.
Because once you’re a mom, there’s an understanding.
You’ll get why she was overprotective because you’ll want to throw your children into a bubble at times, too. They’re your life. Your everything. You can’t breathe knowing they’re unsafe.
You’ll understand why she needed her alone time at night. It’s not that she was pushing you away. She was pulling herself back together. Gluing the pieces of herself that spilled out with her frustration over sibling arguments, the cheerios that fell on the floor as she left the house, and the constant whining throughout the day.
Her world is her family.
And it’s something you can never understand until you have little children and an overwhelming number of responsibilities on your hands because your heart walks outside your body.
And you need to keep it safe.
You never realize those sacrifices until you’re sacrificing yourself.
And then you’ll finally look your mom in the eyes and say, “I get it now. Thank you.”
