Before you know it
that baby with pink skin whose tiny toes peek through his blanket,
and lips are pouted dreaming against the warmth of your body
will be wobbling to and fro before falling into your arms.
Before you know it
that baby who is milk drunk on your shoulder with a big gummy smile will be bouncing up and down in her seat, scooping scrambled eggs into her toothy mouth.
Before you know it
that toddler taking over your bed each night will be spending most of his time in his room with the door closed.
Before you know it
that toddler climbing you like a tree so afraid to separate for the first time will confidently walk down the aisle at graduation.
Before you know it
the living room scattered with toys and mess will be spotless.
Before you know it
the litany of goodnights will be replaced by just one phone call.
Before you know it
those 18 years at home,
all the good moments,
the hard moments,
the distracted moments,
the messy moments,
the frustrating moments
and the moments you cried happy tears,
will be over.
And you’ll miss it.
Because they grow up so fast.
And growing up is exciting and terrifying and fun and overwhelming,
all at the same time.
It’s seeing your children grow and learn,
and what kind of people they become as adults.
But it’s also letting go.
And it all happens
before you know it.
